It’s half-term time, and many families go skiing in the Alpes. But should they be skiing ski off-piste, despite the risks of severely injuring themselves? That wonderful powder snow tempts many skiers off the marked slopes. But not everyone is careful enough.
Recently, three people died in an avalanche at a popular ski resort in the French Alps. The avalanche hit a group of ten school children and covered them with a thick layer of ice. Fortuitously, some survivors were rescued in time so it could have been worse.
Rescue methods include using dogs to sniff people out and if the people are at a high altitude using helicopters to rescue them quicker. There have been many ski accidents before this and many of them have been just as bad so it leaves me with a question. Why do people ski off piste despite the risks?
