A deadly attack by a crazy man occurred in Westminster at 2.42 pm on the 22nd of March. It included one stabbing and a deliberate car accident. Five people have been killed: three by the car, a policeman who was stabbed, and the attacker himself who was shot by the police. Most of the area around Big Ben, and Westminster Bridge, was locked down and people had to evacuate. Many MPs were kept safe in Westminster Palace, including visiting tourists.
The first attack was by a car. After having crossed half the bridge seemingly normal, the driver suddenly veered up on the pavement and ran over at least four, but maybe up to twelve people. The car reached the end of the bridge and drove into the gates of Parliament. The people that were ran over were looked after by emergency staff from the NHS that had hurried to the scene.
Shortly after, the attacker from the car (now on foot) entered the security area around the Palace and stabbed a police officer who died shortly after, despite MPs and other onlookers trying first aid. The attacker went on and was confronted by armed police. He didn’t listen to the warning and was shot. He died too.
One lady had to be saved from the river Thames. It took until 7 pm before people were allowed to evacuate the Parliament building.
The day of the London attack was also the anniversary of another attack in Brussels and Metropolitan Police think it may have something to do with this. They think that there was only one attacker who could possibly have been motivated by Islamist extremist groups, like ISIS. After some investigation and a raid by the in Birmingham, it seems that he was not directed by them though, but a “lone wolf”.
This is the latest terror attack since 2011 and has certainly been a catastrophic one.
24 hours after the attack, the attacker’s identity has been found out: Khalid Masood, born in England with a different name at the time of birth. He rented the SUV he used in the attack in Birmingham and then used it to run people over on Westminster bridge.
