A huge tropical ocean storm struck Kalija only a few weeks ago yet the impact of the winds and waves are monstrous. The death toll was 30 people, which is small considering the amount of buildings toppled.
The coastline is relying on help from navy crews from India. Over one million people were saved and are now in hospitals recovering. Traders have lost their businesses as the rivers and sea have flooded so their future hangs in the balance. Electricity has been cut from many houses and offices. Apparently, the power infrastructure was severely damaged and this was responsible for about 50 percent of the people who died. This tragic event is not the fist of its kind. India had a terribly damaging cyclone that hit them in 2007 called Cyclone Yemyin and one in 2018 called Cyclone Gaja.
