In East Africa the worst food and water crisis in 60 years is hitting young and old. In this dry and poor part of the world there is not enough water and food to keep people alive. But there are things you could do to help.
A story has been in the news that a mother turned up at a hospital with a young child (having lost her two toddlers on the way; they had died of malnutrition ). The baby was put on a drip and within five minutes the baby was smiling.
Famines are terrible and hit people that are already poor. In Somalia, one of the worst hit countries, a long civil war makes the situation not only desperate but also dangerous. Out of every five children born in Somalia, one dies before its fifth birthday, says the charity DEC.
When there was a famine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 3.8 million people died - that is half the population of London! We cannot allow this to happen again. What can you do to help these helpless children and adults? You could donate some money to a charity that helps people in East Africa, e.g., the D.E.C. If everyone would just give a little bit of money towards this crisis, it will be a crisis no more.
There are also bigger things you can do: Some of the Newsnuggets team raised over 200 pounds by selling Easter decorations outside school just before the holiday started. All proceeds will go to the charity of the DEC.
