Driverless cars should be taking over the roads in 4 years time, claims the government. The UK needs to be leaders in this development, they say.
But this is not going to be an easy task. The budget that would be needed to bring the new technology out into the world would be 946 million pounds. On the bright side, this could support up to 27,000 jobs for men and women by 2035. Plus, by 2035 this will also be worth around 28 billion (not million!) pounds to the UK economy. Unfortunately critics say that this technology still needs a lot of work before it can be let free on the streets.
Good
Not as many street lights would not be needed because the cars' lights would be extra bright. This saves energy.
The cars could be electric and stop mass pollution.
Provides up to 27,000 jobs in the UK
Blind and disabled people could "drive".
Bad
Super-expensive project (high investments).
Needs loads of work before it is ready.
MAYBE coming in 2021, MAYBE.
Moral issues can come up - who should decide what a car does if it is in an accident; who will the car be programmed to run over?
