On Friday 14 June, 32 of the 195 countries in the world came to Russia to compete in the Fifa World Cup. It will be hosted in 11 different cities across that vast country -- with Moscow, the capital, hosting the final on 15th July.
The first match was Russia vs Saudi Arabia with Saudi Arabia loosing 5:0. For the first time in their history, Panama and Iceland qualified for the World Cup. 13 European teams are competing -- making it the continent with the most countries in the World Cup. It is the 21st World Cup ever.
The first extremely exciting game was Portugal vs Spain last Friday, which ended with a score of 3:3 with Ronaldo, the Portuguese striker, scoring the first and only hatrick of this World Cup so far (that's when one player scores three goals in one game). As well as thrashings in this World Cup there have some surprises, such as Germany loosing to Mexico 1:0 and Brazil drawing 1:1 with Switzerland. Still with many World Cup games to be played this will no doubt prove exciting til the end.
