At the annual Davos Forum where global leaders came together to debate economic policy, including how to tackle Climate Change, Sir David Attenborough warned that humankind has the power to exterminate whole ecosystems “without even noticing”, and urged all governments to treat the natural world with respect.
It is true that a lot has to be tackled, but there are some good news worth mentioning: Many animal species are no longer seen as on the verge of extinction, because of great conservation efforts. These would include the mountain gorillas and the Rothschild giraffes.
The population of mountain gorillas has risen by 10% because people are becoming more aware of the things they do and how they are effecting the wildlife. Animals are being specially protected if they are endangered species such as giant Pandas, fin whales and white Rinos. The population of grey and fin whales are slowly rising ever since hunting them became illegal. WWF worker says ”Our planet is amazing. what will you do to keep it that way?” Inger Andersen from IUCN says ”These conservation successes are proof that the ambitious collaborative efforts of governments, businesses and civil society”.
Though these successes deserve to be highlighted, but much still needs to be done. One of the biggest fails is the Amazon Rainforest as it is being deforested at an alarming rate, as well as our need to be aware of our very alarmingly high plastic consumption.
