Are school lunches improving, or are they still like they were in the 1970's? At Barnes Primary School they are certainly both healthier and more delicious.
If you are an adult, who has been out of school for years, you may remember the typical school lunch of pizza, doughnuts and coke. And maybe afterwards a chocolate bar from the vending machine. This would not do today. What is missing from this meal is fresh fruits and vegetables, rice and other healthy foods. Healthy food creates healthy people: it helps slowing down growing rates of obesity, lowers high blood pressure and helps against diabetes.
School meals also impact the environment. Almost 20% of global carbon emissions come from the global food system. To make food supplies and cafeterias go greener reduces a school's carbon footprint and is one big step on the path to becoming a “green school”. Because so many schools want to be "green", many of the unhealthy brands are going out of business. At Barnes Primary School we make sure that are food is natural and NOT unhealthy. For happy children, and a better environment.
