A BBC-commissioned UK research showed that 7 is the age that children become aware of the news whilst 12.6 is the average age a child signs up for a social media account (2016 Common Sense Media survey). The time between 7 and 13 therefore represents a great window to instil in children the value of asking questions and develop their critical thinking.

Beyond acquiring concrete knowledge and insight through discussion, interviewing, research and writing, Newsnuggets also offers an important opportunity for kids to learn some of the soft-skills that characterize successful people: the comfort to join in a discussion on any current topic, the skill to understand what it means to be part of the democratic process and a feeling of being entitled to take part in the decision-making process as a matter of course.
