In December a house on the Terrace in Barnes collapsed. Just disappeared! The disaster created chaos around Barnes and made rush hour more of a slow hour. It also happened to be a famous house that broke into pieces.
Luckily, nobody got hurt. It seems this all happened because the basement was being dug out – like so many house owners do in this area and all around London. Perhaps being so close to the river did not help either. The ground close to the river moves more than in other places and is softer.
The house that collapsed happens to be quite well-known. For example, did you know one of the founders of the FA, who wrote the rules, once lived in this house? Because it is a special house, Richmond Council might ask the owners to make sure they rebuild it so it looks exactly like it did before it fell down.
On the day it happened, many people could be seen taking selfies in front of the rubble that was recently a nice house.
