Sexual assault is a problem women have faced for many years but have never said anything. Recent events have started to change this.
Assault means that someone does something to you without your permission; something you don’t like or that hurts you. Many women have come out about sexual assault after the Harvey Weinstein scandal. If you don’t know who Harvey Weinstein is, he is a Hollywood producer who is accused of assaulting and raping many women over his career.
After women spoke out about Weinstein, many more men have been accused of sexual assault and bad behavior against women. At first it was the film industry that was in focus, and now the attention has moved onto the political community. Most likely, many other women will come forward about sexual assault. People say women are no longer 2nd class citizens, but many women feel there is still a long way to go until we have reached equality and fairness.
It does not matter if you are a boy or a girl: if someone does something to you that you don’t like, and perhaps also tells you to be quiet about it, don’t! Go and talk to an adult that you trust, or call for example Childline 0800 1111.
