Historically, men have dominated football, but is it time for a change? At Barnes Primary School, it took a dedicated mum to set the ball in motion.
People ask if it is time for a change because some wonder whether schools do not associate football with boys too much, and therefore give them more opportunities than the girls. In my opinion, girls should be encouraged to play more football.
I think that girls need special chances to play more football because, normally, boys dominate the pitch in the playground during breaks, which is not fair on the girls. This leads to peer pressure, and shapes people's way of thinking. It makes boys think they should play and that they are better than girls. And girls, who might think from the start that they are good and want to take part, change their opinion and do not want to join in.
This has been happening for a very long time, and Barnes Primary School has been looking for a way to solve it. In our school, a few years ago, a mother of a child in year 3 started a girls' football club and this was great, so she took it a little bit further. This mum went as far as starting a football club for other mothers. This was very successful and our PE (physical education) teacher was then encouraged to start a girls' football team, and later a tournament. You might be thinking that, with all of this, we have almost forgotten about the boys. This has not happened. Whilst we were building on the girls' football, we were introducing rugby to the boys.
To conclude, everyone of us at BPS can make a difference. Everyone of us should be invited to explore and play new sports. That's why, at Barnes, we have a Girls Football Team. This opinion piece told you my opinion of girls playing football. I hope you enjoyed it and I hope you now realize what you can do to help. Thank you!
